Everything you need to host Belonging Day on Saturday, August 14, 2027. Back to the main Belonging Day page.
What Belonging Day Is
Belonging Day celebrates the people, places, and traditions that turn a location into a community. It falls on the second Saturday of August. The idea is to participate where you live: meet a neighbor, shop local, visit a landmark, volunteer, or share a table.
Ground rules
- Everyone is welcome, of every age and background.
- Belonging Day takes no side. Keep your event friendly to all your neighbors.
- It is free to join. Nobody pays to host or to use the name.
- You do not need permission to celebrate. Pledge your town so it is counted.
- Follow your local rules for permits, food, and street use.
Pick your style
| Style | Best for | You need | Effort |
|---|---|---|---|
| Porch or driveway gathering | A few neighbors | Chairs, a pitcher of something cold | Low |
| Potluck table | A street or building | A folding table, dishes people bring | Low |
| Garage sale plus neighbor walk | Pairing with Garage Sale Day | Your sale, plus a walk to meet the block | Low |
| Shop-local walk | A downtown or main street | Three or four shops that agree to take part | Medium |
| Park cleanup morning | Families, scouts, clubs | Gloves, bags, permission from the park owner | Medium |
| History walk | A historical society or library | A route, a guide, a few old photos | Medium |
| Street or block party | A whole block | A city permit in most places, a plan for traffic | High |
Planning timeline
- Six weeks out: pick your style and place, pledge your town, ask two neighbors to help.
- Four weeks out: check permits and rules with your city clerk. Invite people.
- Two weeks out: post your listing (copy below). Confirm helpers and supplies.
- One week out: send a reminder to everyone invited. Check the weather plan.
- Day of: set up early. Greet people at the door. Take photos if people agree.
- After: send us one photo and one sentence about what happened.
Safety and permits
Street closures, amplified music, food sales, and alcohol usually need a permit or follow local rules. Your city or town clerk can tell you what applies. For larger events, ask whether you need insurance. This kit is general guidance, not legal advice.
